The new year is almost here. As we approach the time where we all have a fresh list of goals to achieve, which will encompass everything from weight loss, personal, professional, and more. For the majority of 'regular' gym goers, I hear A LOT of talk to the sound of

"Ugh, it's new years resolutioners time"

"I wont be able to get on any of the equipment now"

"All these people are going to fall off in a couple months anyway, why do they even bother?!"

I despise this talk. While it does get more crowded in January at the gym, and not everyone will stick to it, for us 'regulars', take a step back and think for a minute. We were all a beginner once. For a lot of people who do not have the discipline that we do (that took years of practice), the fact that they are stepping foot in the gym now may both be huge physical and mental steps for them.

Look, we all are a lot of like. All of us want to get in shape, look better and feel better. Rather than pointing and laughing at the overweight person on the treadmill, they should be commended for finally doing it! Rather than getting mad at the skinny kid on the bench you want, offer him a spot, and perhaps work in with him, and share some knowledge. Again, none of us started out knowing what we currently know. All of us would do things differently if we knew then what we know now. I absolutely love helping people and if I can make sure people avoid wasting time by making mistakes that I did, that's great!

The reason I always make it a point to talk about these things every year is

I STARTED TRAINING AS A NEW YEARS RESOLUTION

Yes. That's the truth. Fitness is who I am, I have spent the last 15 years of my life devoted to the lifestyle. It's not a hobby, it is who I am. A 'silly' New Years Resolution changed my life forever. I was that skinny kid who started on January 2nd (because the gym was closed), doing stupid workouts, not eating right. I was very fortunate to start training with someone experienced pretty early on so it wasn't long before I was on the right track. I am VERY thankful for that!

This time of year in the gym is exciting to me for this reason. Anyone who knows me, knows I LOVE talking 'shop'. Sharing different exercises or routines I have found work better, tasty and healthy recipes, anything I can do to give people more tools and keep their momentum going! Virtually all of my close friends are those I have met from the gym. I challenge all of you to take the time, make new friends, and help others! After all, that's what this time of year is all about.

Happy Holidays!
